The Full Article

Welcome to The Switch, your guide to personal transformation and emotional well-being. In today's episode, we delve into the concept of becoming your own best friend and how it relates to the essential art of flicking the switch. To effectively shift your mindset and emotional state, it's crucial to cultivate a high degree of self-awareness and find balance across the multiple dimensions of yourself.

The Importance of Self-Awareness

When we are polarised or in denial of certain aspects of ourselves, it becomes challenging to make the switch. We can find ourselves stuck at one end of the spectrum, unable to see the other side. To effectively flick the switch, we must be aware of all the dimensions of ourselves, our emotions, and our mindset.

Becoming Your Own Best Friend

In episode one, I made an important recommendation about the vital need to give yourself self-love, particularly when you need to flick the switch back into positive territory. Today, we're diving deeper into the concept of becoming your own best friend. This means treating yourself as you would someone you care deeply about, like the best friend you have in the world.

To become your own best friend, consider removing the prefix "self" from terms like self-love, self-compassion, self-acceptance, self-care, and self-respect. Instead, extend love, compassion, acceptance, care, and respect to yourself, just as you would to a dear friend.

Unconditional Acceptance

Imagine your best friend revealing their deepest insecurities, darkest thoughts, and most embarrassing moments to you. Would you judge them harshly or condemn them? Of course not. As their best friend, you would listen with an open heart, offer compassion and understanding, and accept them whollyβ€”the good, the bad, and everything in between.

This unconditional acceptance is precisely what we need to offer ourselves. It is a fundamental prerequisite to any form of personal transformation and, ultimately, fulfilment.

The Age of Social Media

In the digital age, we often present only the highlight reel of our lives on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. We project a polished, curated, and perfected version of ourselves, hiding away the parts we deem unlovable or socially unacceptable.

It's time to go beyond the simplistic idea of self-compassion and self-love. Being your own best friend means embracing the dark, hidden, and imperfect parts of yourself that you may never talk about, even to your closest loved ones.

Acknowledging Your Shadow

Swiss psychologist Carl Jung coined the term "shadow" to describe the aspects of our personality that we suppress, deny, and keep subconscious. These are not necessarily negative traits, but rather parts of ourselves that we have learned to conceal from a young age due to social conventions, upbringing, shame, or trauma.

To become your own best friend, it's essential to acknowledge and embrace your shadow. Invite your shadow into the safe space of your mind palaceβ€”a concept we discussed in episode two. Allow yourself to express your fears and weaknesses without the concern of being judged.

Discovering Your Shadow

Discovering your shadow isn't always easy. It often lies buried deep within your subconscious, only emerging when triggered by life circumstances or personal experiences. Some people deliberately place themselves in situations of tension or discomfort, getting out of their comfort zone or even putting themselves in danger, to unveil these hidden facets of their being.

This process of self-discovery, or the quest to find yourself, involves confronting your own fears, impulses, and the animal side of yourself that you may have buried deep down. The goal isn't to eliminate these aspects, but rather to accept them and let them wash over you without being controlled by them.

The Shadow Tool

Psychologist Phil Stutz, in his work, mentions the shadow tool. He believes that by facing and accepting our shadowβ€”the parts of ourselves we are ashamed of or that hold us backβ€”we can access our true potential. Integrating all parts of ourselves, including the hidden ones, is the path to becoming truly whole.

Pitfalls and Balance

As you embark on this journey of self-discovery, be mindful of potential pitfalls. Excessive self-esteem can veer into narcissism, while excessive self-deprecation can lead to self-sabotage. Strike a balance by extending to yourself the same care, compassion, and honesty you would offer your best friend.

Support yourself through challenges, encourage growth, and offer gentle guidance when you stumble. Celebrate your victories, both big and small, and comfort yourself in moments of defeat or doubt.

The Mirror Exercise

To reach the core of yourself, try looking at yourself in the mirror each morning and verbalize, "I see you, I accept you, and I love you. Don't worry, it's going to be okay." Peer through your own eyes, down to your soul, as part of a healthy daily exercise.

Courage and Vulnerability

Facing your shadow requires courage and vulnerability. Admit your flaws and love yourself unconditionally. Create a safe inner sanctuary, a Mental Palace or Retreat Abode, where you can engage in regular self-reflection and extend to yourself the same kindness and grace you would give your most cherished friend.

The Path to Wholeness

Integrating with your shadow is the path to becoming whole again, with a deep and unshakable sense of self. Once you have this, flicking the switch becomes much easier. You'll have a better understanding of your contours and can navigate from one end to the other with greater ease.

Welcoming Your Shadow

Instead of fighting against, denying, or suppressing parts of yourself, transform them into resources and wisdom. Step into your mental palace, create a space for non-judgmental and self-accepting conversation, and invite your shadow for tea. Have a heart-to-heart with this part of yourself that you may have ignored until now.

Imperfect Perfection

This journey isn't about perfection; it's about wholeness. Accept and know all parts of yourself, even the ones that feel unlovable. Recognize that your flaws and struggles are part of what makes you beautifully and perfectly human.

Patience and Progress

Be patient with yourself on this journey to self-friendship. Take time, sit down, and breathe. Offer yourself the same grace you would extend to a loved one. Celebrate every progress you make with your shadow, no matter how small. Like The Little Prince taming the fox, take one step at a time, and every day you'll get closer.

The Longest Relationship

The relationship you have with yourself is the longest you will ever have. Your parents will eventually pass, your children will live their own lives, and friends may come and go. But you will always be with yourself, from your first breath to your last. Nurture yourself and your shadow with care, infuse this relationship with compassion, and let it be a source of strength, resilience, self-control, and unconditional love.

Conclusion

Remember, you are not perfect, and that's okay. We are all imperfectly perfect. What matters is to be aware of this state, accept it, and gain more balance and control over the way you live and grow.

Contrary to the common misconception, we don't only live once. We only die once, but we can live every day until then. That's what truly matters.

Thank you for joining me on this exploration of self-friendship and shadow integration. Embrace the process, be kind to yourself, and never forget that you're worthy of your own love and acceptance. Keep on a steady path to yourself and to more fulfilment.

Until next time, this is The Switch, reminding you to keep flicking that switch, one self-loving day at a time.
